Work Statement: Harvest was inspired by the changing seasons. Watching spring pass into summer, summer to fall, and the knowledge that winter would be coming next, bringing with it months of snow. I collected the things surrounding me that remind me of fall: Apples, The last of the never ending Zucchini, Bright Goldenrod, Staghorn Sumac, The Timothy Grass that was starting to brown, Sunflowers, and Curly Dock. I then cast these in iron, solidifying a physical memory of the plants I had harvested. I painted them with natural mineral pigments to bring back some of the life and color of the original plant matter, and to connect it back to its organic roots without trying to alter or disguise the nature of the casting itself.
This piece serves to capture a moment, a memory, a feeling. But like all memories it doesn’t grow, only exists is stasis, a reminder of what was.
