Work Statement: Gonzales' pieces from Finding the Window series are pulled, life-size masses of molten glass. The dynamic work captures gestural synchronicity, recording an event or a moment in time.
Artist Bio: Romina Gonzales (b. Lima, Peru, 1989) is a New York based, interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, video, installation, printmaking, writing and performance. Her work focuses on the expansion of consciousness from a postcolonial lens— through a visual record of actions that elicit transformation to comment on society, culture and politics. Narratives are dictated by the syntax of mundane situations and substances that undergo simple and seemingly natural, yet arbitrary processes dictated by her own experience. These question perception, interpretation, subjectivity and cause-effect patterns, offering alternative perspectives within rational thinking and behavior.
Exhibitions include Vitraria Museum in Venice, Italy (2014), Memorial Sloan Kettering Infusion Center (2015) and the Agnes Varis Art Center (2014) in Brooklyn, Holland Tunnel Gallery in Newburgh, Fort Makers (2019) in New York City and Fundación Euroidiomas in Lima, Perú (upcoming). Performances and screenings include Sibilants at Hive Art Community and EMT (Eating my Teeth) at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn (2020). Her work has been featured in the New York Times, New York Post, New York Magazine, CBS New York, Hyperallergic, Sight Unseen, Remezcla, Revista Cosas and Casas, Glass Quarterly Magazine and New Glass Review by the Corning Museum of Glass. Collections include the Museum of American Glass (upcoming) and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York (2014). She was a 2019 recipient of the CGCA Fellowship at Wheaton Arts and was invited as a Craftsperson in Residence at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA for 2020.
Gonzales has an active teaching practice, having conducted lectures and demonstrations for programs at Stanford University (2019), Cornell University (2019), Pratt Institute (2017), Bard Graduate Center (2017-2019), Brooklyn Tech High School (2019), UrbanGlass (2014-present), University of Georgia (2016-2018), St. Francis College (2018), Long Island University (2013) and Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA (2020). Gonzales frequently collaborates with international artists, using glass as a primary medium. Past projects include Anima for Mika Tajima, Mirrors for A.K.
